South Africa

Original discussion

As we grow SkilledUp Life, I am discovering problems around the world. One of them is the 34.9% high unemployment rate in South Africa. Some people say this is in fact higher than 50%.

Since Npumi Mngqibisa (our Chief Fun Officer) joined us three weeks ago, we have started to look at how we might be able to contribute towards solving the above problem:

  • To create jobs, especially in the Tech Sector, we have to help Tech Founders realise their visions. Help those early stage tech companies to first survive and then grow.
  • We can do this by providing them with free talent from our pool of 4,161 from 81 countries. 100 Volunteers joins us every 2 to 4 days thanks to our own Volunteers who deploy and manage our Volunteer acquisition strategy with Mithun.
  • As the companies start to grow with the help of our Volunteers, they will remember those who helped them free, and will (hopefully) offer them jobs.

So in essence, free talent stimulates the market by creating high-growth tech companies.

In the past, we were helped in our journey by two South Africans Isaac Lekgothoane and Yolanda Tom. Isaac was hired by Compaira, a UK tech startup that is growing rapidly.

Our current team includes Sakhile Nkosi from South Africa, in addition to Npumi. Yolanda who volunteered with Isaac, rejoined yesterday to give a helping hand to Mpumi.

As the Tech Companies start to grow and become investible, we might also be able to work with Business Angels and Venture Capitalists (VCs) to help them speed up their growth rate. This will stimulate Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into South Africa. And it goes without saying, it will create even more jobs.
