I am Deimante, an expat Lithuanian living in Denmark. I have graduated with a master’s studies in Strategy, Organisation and Leadership this year with the main focus on Human Resources and three months ago I was approached by SkilledUp Life to volunteer for their HR team as an HR strategist.
If you would take a look at my previous experiences, my resume is all about marketing, content creation and strategies varying from marketing to sales, customer experience and even my own business, that I have had several years ago. Then a natural question would arise, why HR? To keep it short: my focus and interest over the years have been shifting from product to human. During the years of experience in the different fields of tech organizations, SaaS start-ups and my own business, the thing that I have loved the most and the connecting point was always people. I truly believe that people are the greatest asset and resource that an organisation can have. Moreover, that is where an organisation can indeed build its competitive advantage. Imagine if you would have the best product, but no one to develop, promote and sell it? That’s where my interest lays in Human resources.
If you would ask me, marketing and HR has never seemed so related as it is now. Company branding while attracting new employees, creating a positive employee experience and many more is just bits of how closely both fields are connected. Therefore, I did not feel like I am taking a major shift. However, having not so much actual HR-related practical experience on my resume, got me stuck in the job market. That’s when I saw SkilledUp Life as a great opportunity to bring my theoretical knowledge into the action. Right now, I am volunteering at SkilledUp Life for about three months, and I can strongly advise anyone who wants to shift the field they are working in into something they have been dreaming for a while now, to join one of our teams. I have gained so much more confidence in the HR, I have learned so many things and moreover met so many people from around the world. I have been responsible for full-cycle recruitment, HR strategy creation, volunteer life cycle and many more…
Why should you join? Because it is experience. It is surely nice to have something written on your resume than an empty gap, which recruiters will be questioning what you have been doing during this time. However, it is not only that. You meet new people, you communicate at different organizational levels, you are responsible for planning your own time and tasks, moreover you feel unified with someone who is in a similar situation just like you are, and you are going together to reach the same goal.
Nevertheless, you are doing a favour for yourself, you are also getting some karma points by collaborating in order for an organisation to succeed! A win-win situation is always a good idea, right? 😊
