Angie Huang

Hello everyone, my name is Angie. I am a student from China and I am currently studying for a master’s degree at UCL in the UK. During my Volunteer Term at SkilledUp Life, I was responsible for running the official account of SkilledUp Life Xiaohongshu (a Chinese social media platform) to expand SkilledUp Life’s influence in China, attract more volunteers from China, and expand SkilledUp Life’s Chinese team. My Volunteer Term ended in October 2024 and I would like to share my experience.

First of all, an important reason why this opportunity attracted me was that I could volunteer remotely and only needed to contribute 2 to 3 hours per day. The time was arranged flexibly, so I could volunteer without the pressure of commuting and clocking in. However, within this short period, I have greatly grown in various aspects.

I have proliferated in doing social media marketing. During my onboarding training, my former teammate provided me with a detailed onboarding session and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) document, so I could get started quickly. Thanks to that, I have been able to explore and optimise the SOP to continuously improve the efficiency of my volunteer activities. My key responsibility was to build connections on Xiaohongshu and WeChat and I really enjoyed doing that because I like to communicate with people, and I am also very happy that I can practice more in these aspects in my work.

This opportunity also allowed me to improve my ability to adapt to remote work in the digital age. This is my first time working remotely. The company’s teams are all remote, and people on the team come from all over the world. While volunteering at SkilledUp Life, I quickly became familiar with various remote office software and became comfortable with using them to communicate with team members and finish my tasks.

Last but not least, I enjoyed the atmosphere of working on the SkilledUp Life team very much. During my term, I helped recruit many Chinese volunteers to join the SkilledUp Life team, and I have a good relationship with the members of the Chinese team. I can directly communicate with the CEO or team lead for the execution of many tasks. And this equally friendly and professional working atmosphere really helped me to grow.
