Lisa Scaife

About Me

My name is Lisa, I’m a 1st Class Honours BSc Physics with Employment Experience Graduate from Sheffield. I have a variety of science and technology experience and I am looking for opportunities to begin a career in data science as I enjoyed using coding to extract useful information from data in my lab modules. I have intermediate level Python knowledge and I am self-taught in C and MATLAB, which demonstrates my aptitude for learning programming languages and software tools. I am beginning an introductory course to data and SQL in early February 2022, which I hope will give me a grounding in data science tools and concepts.

Education

BSc Physics with Employment Experience (Class 1 Honours) 2019

University of Sheffield

I completed two Python modules and used Python for data analysis in experimental modules. Within these modules, I delivered oral presentations and produced complex written reports. I achieved average marks of 79, 83 and 71 in my first, second and third years, respectively. I completed a Degree with Employment Experience placement as a Research and Development Scientist at Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

Work & Experience

Business Support Analyst

SatSense Ltd.

09/02/2021 - 11/16/2022

I worked with the CEO to review the company website and documents, and develop a company handbook.

Corporate Tax Trainee

Saffery Champness LLP

09/09/2020 - 03/31/2021

This role involved researching tax legislation, understanding and interpreting company accounts and using a tax return software package. I attended team meetings to discuss progress on different jobs and take on work as required to ensure the team’s deadlines were met.

Graduate Embedded Software Engineer

Chameleon Technology UK Ltd.

07/18/2019 - 09/04/2020

I worked on four projects, incorporating four programming languages whilst working as part of an interdisciplinary team. To enable me to perform my role, I taught myself to program in C and use a variety of different software packages as, unlike my colleagues, my background was in Physics as opposed to Software Engineering. In the most recent project, I worked as part of a two-person team with the company’s head of European operations in two parallel project trials to explore integration of our technology with that of the European Smart Meter market, in advance of a potential market entry by the company.

On CampUS Placement: Events Assistant

Sheffield Robotics, University of Sheffield

01/06/2019 - 07/05/2019

I assisted in organising and promoting the UK Robotics and Autonomous Systems (UK-RAS) School Robot Competition 2019 to introduce young people to robotics research in the UK. I helped to organise the competition launch and attended science festivals across the UK to promote the competition, as well as writing regular blog posts for teachers and maintaining regular email communication with PR consultants, academics, marketing professionals and events managers.

Think Ahead: SURE Scheme

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Sheffield

07/02/2018 - 09/07/2018

My project aim was to stabilise the power emitted from a laser used by my research group.

Research and Development Scientist

Science and Technology Facilities Council

07/10/2017 - 07/01/2018

During my placement year I worked as part of a team in the Experimental Science Applications Group. I was involved in the planning and performing of our group’s experiments, helping other User Groups to carry out their experiments, and data analysis. My main project involved teaching myself MATLAB in order to write a program which takes a sample of images of the laser beam used in our experiments to calculate its intensity distribution across a target at a given distance from best focus and angle with respect to the beam axis.
