Over the last three months, Nigeria has emerged as the number one market for Volunteers. As a result, most of our own team now comes from Nigeria. This was not by any design. I was curious to find out why this is the case. So I asked my teammates a simple question – why is SkilledUp Life so popular in Nigeria? Below are their responses.

“Skilledup Life is so popular in Nigeria due to factors influencing Volunteers to join where SkilledUp Life:

– Is seen as a passport to gain Experience. The Nigeria job market has been structured in way that you must have practical experience to land a job. Most recruiters always asks for a number of years of experience in a job invite.

– High rate of youth unemployed. Volunteers join to gain Experience so as not to stay idle and also to enrich their CVs.

– Tech skills are most wanted skills and paid well now in the job market. Volunteers see Skilledup Life as an avenue to showcase their capabilities in the technology world.”

“There’s a huge population in Nigeria and over 70% of them are youths. Most of these youths come from middle or lower income class groups and are really just trying to get by and make the best out of their lives and so every opportunity to them counts.

The opportunity with SkilledUp Life gives them a chance to gain experience that can impact in some way. An average Nigerian has a hustling spirit and would want to try anything worth trying. That’s why it is quite easier to get people to know and sign up for SkilledUp Life from Nigeria. “

“The Nigerian market is rift with employers asking for several years of experience from recent graduates or from those switching careers.

So, the young population would join on an opportunity that would help them build work Experience fast. That’s the major reason in my opinion, that makes SkilledUp Life so popular.”

“First and most important is the fact that Nigerians have the ability to spot and adapt to opportunities quickly… It’s a thing for us. The very reason why Nigerians are virtually everywhere and doing many things many times not so good, but most times positive. So SkilledUp Life just happens to be one of those Opportunities Nigerians are keeping their eyes out for.

Secondly, many Nigerians want out. The conditions back home are not all that favourable, so any opportunity that increases the prospects of one’s outlook being better and that improves one’s chance of maybe leaving the country… That opportunity is grabbed with both hand.”

SkilledUp Life is very popular in Nigeria because there is a lot of youth with tech knowledge but with no avenue to get the required Experience.

So many youths will gladly enroll in Volunteering just to get practical experience.

Asides from the high rate of unemployment, so many youths want to break into the tech space and also to secure jobs abroad.

“We have talented youths in Nigeria. Most of them are now transitioning into the Tech industry, because Tech skills are now becoming the most sort after and well-paid jobs. And due to the rise in unemployment rate which is largely occupied by the youths, the Nigerian youths are looking for avenue and opportunities where they can showcase their skills and experience, most especially in the Tech industry.

So, they see SkilledUp Life as that platform which gives them the opportunity to gain practical experience and improve their skills by working as a volunteer with Tech startups, which is what most recruiters wants.”

“I believe Nigerians know how to spot and utilise opportunities.

They see something and they go for it. They are more interested in the benefits and how it will make them better.”
